Temples and floating village
2 days trip and excursionDay 1Sunrise on Angkor Wat & Exploration of Angkor Thom
At dawn, you will have an appointment with the most famous and most incredible of all the temples of the city of Angkor: Angkor Wat. Considered the largest religious building ever built by man, this gigantic temple is a model of symbolism and symmetry, and today is more than ever the pride of an entire people. Erected in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II, it is unanimously recognized by specialists as the eighth wonder of the world, and has been listed since 1992 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the afternoon, you will discover the prodigious city of Angkor Thom, the masterpiece of the most powerful Khmer ruler, Jayavarman VII. Following the occupation of Angkor by the Chams from 1177 to 1181, the new king decided to build an impregnable fortress in the very heart of his empire. The magnitude of the construction is staggering, and the audacity of the monarch strikes every visitor who enters the precincts of the city.
Day 2Bang Mealea & floating village of Kompang Khleang.
In the morning, you will discover the mysterious lost temple of Beng Mealea, literally buried in the jungle, asleep for centuries in the forests of Cambodia. It is the most accessible of the remote temples of Angkor, and is considered the life-size model of Angkor Wat, although today it is completely consumed by a voracious nature. Erected between 1113 and 1150 by King Suryavarman II, who had built Angkor Wat, this temple is not easily delivered, and it is difficult to visualize the shape of the monument, as the remains are one with nature. You'll have an experience worthy of Indiana Jones' best travels exploring these vast ruins.
After the visit of the temple, you will take the direction of one of the largest villages of Tonle Sap: Kompong Khleang. The approximately 10,000 inhabitants of the village live almost exclusively from fishing. You will explore the canals (in the rainy season) and the streets (in the dry season) of this incredible little town. During the wet season, the houses seem to float on the lake, the water licking the doors of the houses, but in the dry season, the huge piles appear and reveal a unique landscape of wooden skyscrapers. You will visit a pagoda, built on the site of an ancient temple, and discover pretty murals. Then you will embark for a cruise on the Grand Lake to the floating village of Kompong Pluk. All life is on the water: pigs, dogs, crocodiles and riparians. You will then explore the amazing Flooded Forest, before reaching the floating village of Chong Khneas by water. You will finally return to the shores of the lake and will be driven back to your hotel by road.
